The barnyard animal shelter is often versatile and contains different animal species: chickens, turkeys, rabbits, etc.
Among farmers, economic imperatives take precedence. Mixed breeding is generally practiced to meet immediate food needs. This does not mean that the principle of commerce is excluded.
Raising backyard animals can be lucrative. Chickens that provide meat and eggs are the least expensive. Generally feeding on kitchen waste, their water needs are minimal: 5 ml/kg/day.
On this point, rabbits are more demanding, but do not require special attention either. A rabbit can be mated all year round, from the age of 10 months, with an average of 6 young per litter. We can obtain approximately 25 rabbits per year per doe. The mother prepares for the arrival of the young by lining her nest with down that she pulls from her belly to free her breasts. Rabbit meat is very nutritious. Low in fat and cholesterol, it is rich in proteins, vitamins and mineral salts.
If the rabbit is considered to be a great breeder, the turkey is very comfortable. The largest of the backyard birds is quite fragile: its development is slow and it only reaches adulthood after three years.
