Algeria commemorates the 30th anniversary of the popular demonstrations of December 11, 1960. Like every year, this day is dedicated to the evocation of the memory of the martyrs who fell that day, across the national territory, under the arms of the colonial forces for having demonstrated in the street their perfect adherence to the cause of independence.
Very widely followed by the Algerian population, the demonstrations of December 11, 1960 remain a living symbol of the determination of the people to regain their freedom. It was also an action – very significant and fraught with consequences – of support for the National Liberation Front (FLN) and its political and diplomatic wing, the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA).
The popular demonstration came in response to the visit to Algeria of General de Gaulle, felt as a strong provocation by the Algerians who had, that day, responded to the general strike call launched by the FLN.
