Constantine before 1830
The city of Constantine is adorned with the most beautiful architectural monuments from the time of Salah Bey. This bey, who reigned over Eastern Beylik from 1771 and 1792, undertook a vast urbanization campaign.
It is in this spirit of modernization and beautification that the Sidi El Kettani mosque was built in 1776. This place of worship saw a madrassah annexed to it. The latter was intended for higher education and open to all young people in the province.
In 1789, the city saw the construction of a new madrassah near the Sidi Lakhdar mosque. Salah Bey had the famous El Kantara bridge built in 1792 on the remains of a Roman bridge. Spanning a 120 m deep ravine, this architectural work will mark the birth of the city of bridges.
The urbanization work undertaken by Salah Bey allowed significant extensions of the city. Outside the walls of the Casbah, new neighborhoods and a new history were born.
