Nymphalis polychloros
The Large tortoise (Nymphalis polychloros) is a Palearctic species of lepidoptera in the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Nymphalinae, of the tribe Nymphalini and the genus Nymphalis.
The Great Tortoiseshell is a medium to large sized butterfly. Its wings with cut edges have a rufous upper edged with dark brown and punctuated with black and yellow spots. The dark border of the hindwings is decorated with dark blue lunules. Their reverse is grayish brown. There is no sexual dimorphism.
The Great Tortoise is present from northern Africa to central and southern Europe, Asia Minor and Central Asia.
