Mustapha Pasha Valley before 1830
The lower town of Algiers was, before 1830, the pulsing heart of the capital. Trade was frequent there thanks to the proximity of the port. It was also on this side of the city that the Turkish administration was established.
The most beautiful palaces rubbed shoulders. Dar Mustapha Pasha is part of the logic of the era which wanted to be sumptuous. Built in 1797 for his family, it occupies an area of 709 m2 and is said to contain more than 500,000 pieces of valuable old earthenware.
The house opens onto a s’qifa decorated with niches, basins and water jets decorate the center and the carved cedar awnings reveal a pronounced taste for refinement.
At the top of the palace, a fountain, El Aïn El Hamra, and the immense gardens where the most beautiful flowers and the best scents coexisted.
In 1805, Dey Ahmed confiscated the Pasha's palace and declared it a janissary. Mustapha Pasha died the same year. The French administration installed the National Library there in 1862.
