Oran Gate before 1830
The city of Oran, at the same time, experienced a tumultuous history including earthquakes and Spanish invasions. In 1790, General Mohamed El Kébir entered as a victor and gave the order to build a mosque in honor of Hassan Pasha, dey of Algiers.
Six years later, the mosque rose among the ruins. It was built by the Turks with money from the redemption of Spanish prisoners after their final departure from the region. Until 1830, the beys made Oran their capital to the detriment of Mascara.
