Algiers door knocker
Traditional Algerian arts include a set of traits, values and shapes giving them a specific character. Intimately linked to the history of the country, they are essentially utilitarian, but thanks to the richness of their ornamentation, they also constitute highly appreciated decorative elements.
It is the fruit of long traditions that man, in his relationship with nature, has been able to master to meet the multiple needs of his existence. Driven by the desire to improve and satisfy his domestic, social and cultural needs, he has developed, over time, a range of professions.
As such, the foundry constitutes a tradition where shapes and volumes harmonize. The foundry artisans, thanks to a perfect knowledge of the material used, have given their works the most noble forms. Among these works is the knocker (door knocker).
Prepared from bronze and executed by the founder by fusion, then cast in a clay matrix, the knocker presents an attractive aesthetic appearance and highly refined by geometric and floral decorative elements where the Arab-Berber cultural influence is perceptible.
Mainly utilitarian due to its function as a warning of the presence of a person outside the home, the knocker also provides information on the owner's membership in a social group: it receives ornamental enrichments, enhanced by the inlay of precious metals, a very widespread practice during the Ottoman period in particular.
The machinery and industry that have accelerated the standardized production of everyday items have meant that today, many artisanal products are rarely manufactured, giving way to other objects of the same function, but having undergone the contribution of science and technology.
