Almost all international trade is carried out by sea via eleven commercial ports. Algerian ports have this in common: they provide increasingly important port traffic.
In 1964, CNAN, the Algerian National Navigation Company, was granted a monopoly on maritime transport and ensured the transport of goods, passengers and hydrocarbons.
In the mid-1980s, CNAN was subdivided into three companies and it was SNTM/Hyproc, the National Society for Maritime Transport of Hydrocarbons and Chemical Products, which came into play to establish itself in the transport of hydrocarbons.
The activity of the commercial port of Arzew will, from this time, be linked to that of the new company. Nestled 41 km northeast of Oran, over a total area of 24 ha – 23 ha of land and 1 ha covered – the port of Arzew is the first Algerian port specialized in hydrocarbon traffic.
