This species of large lizard is located in the semi-arid and arid zones of southern Maghreb. With an elongated and tall build, the gray monitor lizard is a carnivorous reptile which feeds on small mammals, birds and broods of which it is very fond.
Its typical habitat is located in the Algerian Grand Reg where it likes to burrow during the night. Of diurnal habits, it does not hesitate to attack medium-sized reptiles: vipers or whiptails or even its congeners.
The size of the adult animal varies between 1 m and 1.50 m. For the female, sexual dimorphism is accentuated in the species given the darker color difference in this one.
The rarefaction of this large reptile is mainly due to poaching, naturalization as a souvenir for tourists or for culinary purposes among the Tuareg (aggazeram).
