February 18 - National Shaheed Day
A country which chooses to move forward is a country which, inevitably, draws from its memory the strength and vigor to achieve this. Rich in a memory marked by a bloody struggle against the colonizer, Algeria follows the path traced by men and women who agreed to put their lives in danger to regain their freedom. A million and a half fighters fell on the field of honor, but did not disappear from collective memory.
Independent Algeria knows how to pay them the tribute befitting their sacrifice. Stelae, commemorative plaques and sanctuaries are erected throughout the national territory, symbolizing the spiritual survival of those who chose the path of martyrdom to show the path to independence.
In this recognition, neither the widow of Shahid who endured all forms of suffering during the National Revolution, nor her children are forgotten. A recognition of independent Algeria which contributes to the perpetuation of the ideals of freedom and the spirit of loyalty, self-sacrifice and courage demonstrated by our valiant martyrs.
A National Day of the Shahid was dedicated as a national holiday and celebrated for the first time on February 18, 1990. This day, marked at the initiative of the children of chouhada, aims to make the connection between past and present to remind young people of the sacrifices of their elders in order to draw inspiration from them and lead other battles, those of development and progress.
