The International Olympic Committee was created by the Congress of Paris (France) on June 23, 1894; he was responsible for the control and development of the modern Olympic games. The committee is an association under international law with legal personality, its duration is unlimited and its head office is in Lausanne (Switzerland).
Non-profit, its missions are:
- to encourage the organization and development of sport and sports competitions;
- to guide and maintain sport in the Olympic ideal by encouraging and strengthening friendship between athletes from all countries;
- to ensure the regular celebration of the Olympic Games;
- to make the Olympic Games ever more worthy of their glorious history and the noble ideal that inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin and his collaborators to revive them.
The International Olympic Committee leads the Olympic movement and retains all rights to the Olympic Games which take place every four years, in different countries, and include the Summer Games and the Winter Olympic Games. The first Olympics in modern times was celebrated in Athens (Greece) in 1896.
The Algerian Olympic Committee was created on October 18, 1963. It was admitted to the International Olympic Committee on January 27, 1964. Algeria participated for the first time in the 18th edition of the Summer Olympic Games which took place from October 10 to 25, 1964 in Tokyo (Japan).
