The Admiralty of Algiers
Before the Spanish occupied, in 1511, one of the four rocks located offshore, and built the Peñon, there already existed a lookout tower, intended for the orientation of ships. Once the Spanish were dislodged from the Peñon by Khair-Eddine, major developments were carried out, the islets connected to the port, a pier built and a lighthouse installed. “On this same site, Arab Ahmed had the so-called Admiralty lighthouse built, the tower of which closely resembles the Golden Tower of Seville; the inhabitants of the country call it Bordj el-Fnar (Fort du Fanal), while Europeans refer to it as the Round Fortress or the Lighthouse Fortress. »
