Volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan who was then director of physical education at the YMCA in Holyhoke, Massachusetts (USA). This sport was first called mintonette before the name volleyball was definitively adopted. Thanks to the YMCA, volleyball was introduced to Canada and many other countries such as Japan, China and the Philippines.
The first national volleyball championships took place in the United States of America in 1922. The first constitutive congress of the International Volleyball Federation was held in Paris in 1947 and was followed by the first European championships in Rome in 1948 and the first world championship in Prague in 1949. Volleyball was recognized as an Olympic sport and included in the 1964 Tokyo games. year, Algeria joins the 70 nations affiliated to the International Volleyball Federation.
