Belon shelduck
The Belon Shelduck (Tadorna tadorna) is a species of bird belonging to the Anatidae family, perhaps called in Antiquity (Pliny the Elder) chenalopex, vulpanser, or “goose-fox”. Like other species of the Tadorna genus, it presents characteristics intermediate between those of geese (low sexual dimorphism, participation of the male in caring for the brood) and those of ducks (morphology, voice). This intermediate position is confirmed by recent phylogenetic studies1.
It is a Palearctic species whose distribution is split into two main areas, one on the maritime shores of northwest Europe and the other in the semi-arid regions of Central Asia.
