Crafts faithfully reflect the traditions of peoples and nations. It is the witness par excellence of civilization, where all kinds of material and cultural traits are integrated, resulting from human activities during a specific phase of the history of humanity and in a defined geographical space.
In southern Algeria, this vast territory where both nomadic and sedentary populations coexist, an artisanal tradition has developed whose objects have the essential merit of being perfectly adapted to their use and executed with an admirable aesthetic sense. The repertoire of Tuareg crafts is rich and varied and leather work occupies an important place.
The saddle bag Square-shaped leather travel bag whose sides measure 40 to 65 cm long. It is open at its upper part along its entire length. A section of skin closes the opening and falls on the front part of the bag, covering it all the way to the bottom. Two eyelets are used to hang the bag from the mehari saddle. The centerpiece of the mehari's adornment, the saddle bag is used by men to hold all kinds of belongings and objects. The women who hold the monopoly on its manufacture do not use it.
