The cardinal is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 84 to 90 mm, tawny in color and whose wing veins are outlined in black. The flight begins in May. This species is observed on the Tell Atlas between 1,300 and 1,800 m altitude. Its caterpillars feed on thistles and violets in clearings and on lawns.
