Day of celebration of the date of the official proclamation of independence, July 5, 1962 inaugurates Year I of independent Algeria. It represents the beginning of a new era in the history of Algeria. A day of demonstration of joy for a reconquered freedom, July 5, 1962 marked the culmination of 132 years of passive and active resistance to colonization and its enterprise of depersonalization and dispossession of land and freedoms.
July 5 is the result of an eight-year long war, at the cost of the heaviest sacrifice that the history of decolonization has ever recorded. It is the outcome of a war with its incalculable consequences: 1 and a half million martyrs, thousands of wounded, orphans, widows, and a devastated country.
The first day of hard-won freedom, July 5, 1962 symbolizes the erasure of a sad date, that of the fall of Algiers, July 5, 1830. A day of celebration commemorating the renewal of a nation which finds itself again, the date of July 5, 1962 celebrates the independence of a country ravaged by war and which is working, with the will of its people, to the work of its reconstruction.
