Moufdi Zakaria Al Cheikh was born in April 1908 in Beni Izguen (wilaya of Ghardaïa) where he studied. He continued them in Tunisian schools and finished them off at the Ezzaytouna mosque in Tunis.
From the beginning of the 1930s, he became involved in political and patriotic action. He was, as such, an active activist within the Association of North African Muslim Students, as well as in the Etoile Nord Africaine, Algerian People's Party, Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties, and National Liberation Front parties.
He contributed to literary and political activity throughout the Maghreb. From 1937 to 1959, he was imprisoned five times. He held the position of General Secretary of the Algerian People's Party and editor-in-chief of the newspaper Echaâb which called for the independence of Algeria in 1937.
His poetry reflects the Algerian and Maghreb reality through its different phases of combat from 1925 to 1977. He was a supporter of the union of Maghreb countries. His poems are characterized by sincerity in expression, and eloquence in words. I excelled in patriotic poetry.
He is the lyricist of the songs of the Revolution and the national anthem “Kassaman”, as well as several popular songs.
He has a rich literary production, part of which has not yet been published. Among his works we can cite “The Sacred Flame”, “In the Shadow of the Olive Trees”, “Inspiration of the Atlas”, and his eternal marvel “The Algerian Iliad”.
He died on the 1st day of the holy month of Ramadhan in the year 1397 AH corresponding to August 17, 1977, in Tunis and buried in Beni Izguen.
