This species has a stretched height, it reaches 50mm in length and 18mm in width. The two valves of the shell have a different development and an asymmetrical shape. The surface of the shell bears ornamentation in relief consisting of 26 to 30 radiating ribs, bearing at regular intervals upturned scales, which form regular concentric rows. The coloring is variable and multicolored, and can be white-yellowish, red, brown or even black.
Chlamys varia can live on the most diverse bottoms, most often sandy on a solid support (shell debris, pebbles) and preferably at a certain depth. In Algeria, this bivalve is very abundant, unfortunately it is not subject to any exploitation.
