During the summer of 1998, from May 22 to September 30, the city of Lisbon will host the last Universal Exhibition of the century. The Portuguese capital will be a hub for nations and cultures participating in the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the departure from Lisbon of the famous Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama who reached the Indies.
The exhibition will aim to promote awareness of the oceans through the creation of a global event that will attract researchers, politicians, businessmen and artists from around the world, bringing them together in frameworks for the exchange of ideas aimed at a new management ethic and a new relationship between humanity and its environment. Among the 150 countries which will participate in the most important forum of nations of the end of the century, Algeria will be present in the northern international zone with an open pavilion of 648 m2.
In line with the theme of Expo '98, "Oceans, a heritage for the future", Algeria will present to visitors "a continent country with two oceans", a green and virgin Mediterranean coast with exceptional historical and archaeological potential and a desert among the largest and most beautiful on the planet. At the Algeria pavilion, a personalized welcome will introduce visitors to the potential as well as the major economic, political and social changes of a young nation resolutely focused on progress and democracy.
The Algeria pavilion is designed in line with the purpose of Expo '98 and will highlight the dimensions retained in the theme: a great Mediterranean maritime power from the 14th to the 17th centuries; a major industrial energy power which has made the development and transport of its hydrocarbons based on choices that respect the environment; a country-continent in which traces of humanity can be found through a universal heritage; a young nation which overcomes its difficulties, rebuilds its institutions on a pluralistic and democratic basis, restructures its economy and its resources in its history and its culture.
