The 1998 FIFA World Cup is the sixteenth edition of the Football World Cup and takes place in France from June 10 to July 12, 1998. It is the second time that France has organized the World Cup after 1938. It is the first World Cup to bring together thirty-two teams in the final phase.

A friendly tournament, the Tournoi de France, was played in 1997 as preparation for the organization of the event. The start of this World Cup was mourned by the death of Fernand Sastre, co-president (with Michel Platini) of the competition's organizing committee, who died of cancer on the morning of June 13, 1998.
