National Diplomacy Day
October 8, 1962 is a date which marked the liberating struggle of the Algerian people. It is on this day that National Diplomacy Day is celebrated each year. Algerian diplomacy made it possible to admit Algeria into international institutions, notably within the United Nations (UN) on October 8, 1962, on the occasion of the holding of its tenth session.
At a time when, inside the country, the liberating struggle was shaking the colonial edifice, Algerian diplomacy was increasing its offensives at the international level and its presence at various regional forums and international meetings. This is expressed very clearly in the proclamation of November 1, 1954 which stipulates in its objectives “the internationalization of the Algerian problem”, reinforced two years later by the Soummam platform. Algerian diplomacy began with notable participation in the Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung (Indonesia) on April 18, 1955.
External support for the national liberation struggle has continued to grow since then, thanks to dynamic diplomatic action which has rallied more and more voices to the national cause. March 30, 1958 was celebrated throughout the world as a Day of Solidarity with Fighting Algeria. During this period, the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) was recognized by several countries. All these efforts and these successes have, without a doubt, led the UN General Assembly, on December 19, 1960, to recognize the right of the Algerian people to self-determination and independence.
Algerian diplomacy left its mark on the country's liberating struggle thanks to personalities like Saâd Dahlab (1919), secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the first GPRA (1958-1960) – he will be head of Algerian diplomacy in the third GPRA (1961-1962) – and Belkacem Krim (1922-1970) who led the Algerian delegation to the negotiations of Evian which led to the signing of the ceasefire agreement on March 19, 1962.
