Smaller than the great cormorant, it is entirely dark-greenish.
The feathers on the top of the head are turned up into a tuft which gave it its name. Unlike the great cormorant, the great crested cormorant is strictly marine and less widespread. In Algeria, it nests on islets not far from the coast and can be observed in Orania and in the far east of the country.
The great cormorant has been on the list of protected animal species in Algeria since 1983.
