Smaller than the large waterbird, dark with large white spots on the sides during the nesting period. Is very widespread in northern Europe, up to the Mediterranean basin.
It frequents both marine environments and inland aquatic environments: lakes, marshes, ponds and aquaculture ponds. It prefers calm environments which allow it to fish for its food without too much difficulty.
In Algeria, it is much more widespread in winter.
