National Shaheed Day
The commemoration of National Shaheed Day symbolizes loyalty to the thousands of Algerians who sacrificed their lives so that Algeria could live free and independent. It is also one of the most significant historical dates in the revolutionary past of our people.
Each commemoration is an opportunity to emphasize the importance to be given to national history and its teaching to young generations who must preserve this sacred link with their glorious past and the revolutionary history of their liberated country at the cost of immense sacrifices and suffering endured for 132 years. Officially proclaimed on February 18, 1990, Shaheed Day aims today to pay vibrant tribute to the chouhada who put their ideal of freedom above all else and gave their lives in return for the independence of their country.
The proclamation of the birth of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the November 1st appeal addressed to the people on the eve of the War of National Liberation officially announced the outbreak of the latter. This will begin, according to data from the Ministry of Mujahideen, with the participation of 1,200 fighters spread throughout the national territory, equipped with some 400 pieces of weapons and only a few homemade bombs.
The Revolution then grew in size and mobilized thousands of Algerians, women and men. At independence, there were a million and a half shahids who fell on the field of honor. Sacrifices which will inscribe the Algerian Revolution in the memory of all the peoples of the planet and will pave the way for subsequent generations who will keep from their ancestors an immeasurable thirst for freedom and a pride which can no longer be denied.
