The Pear Tree
The pear tree is a fruit tree in the Rosaceae family whose fruit is called pear. The tree can reach 15 m high and its habit is pyramidal. Fruiting occurs on 2-year-old branches, while flowering occurs early (March-April). Production is sensitive to climatic hazards and bacterial diseases.
The pear tree fears dry air and soil. Self-compatible, it requires a pollinating variety. Propagation is done by grafting onto quince or pear trees (seeds). Irrigation is essential for the regularization of yields. The pear tree, which covers an area of 11,658 ha, is cultivated throughout the national territory with a certain concentration in the wilayas of Aïn Defla, Béjaïa, Batna and Tizi Ouzou.
The most common varieties are Guyot, Williams, Passe-Crassane, Deanery of Comice, Beurré-Hardy, Alexandria, Conference and Packam's Triumph.
