The pear tree is a fruit tree in the Rosaceae family whose fruit is called pear. The tree can reach 15 m high and its habit is pyramidal. Fruiting occurs on 2-year-old branches, while flowering occurs early (March-April). Production is sensitive to climatic hazards and bacterial diseases.
The pear tree fears dry air and soil. Self-compatible, it requires a pollinating variety. Propagation is done by grafting onto quince or pear trees (seeds). Irrigation is essential for the regularization of yields. The pear tree, which covers an area of ​​11,658 ha, is cultivated throughout the national territory with a certain concentration in the wilayas of Aïn Defla, Béjaïa, Batna and Tizi Ouzou.
The most common varieties are Guyot, Williams, Passe-Crassane, Deanery of Comice, Beurré-Hardy, Alexandria, Conference and Packam's Triumph.
