The orange tree is a small tree of the Rutaceae family with very popular fruits. It occupies an area of 28,000 ha cultivated in Mitidja, the Chélif plains, the areas of Habra and Hacine as well as the plains of Annaba and Skikda. The Citrus sinensis orange tree is a citrus fruit with little or no thorny branches.
The fruit called orange is spherical in shape and includes 8 to 15 easily detachable segments. The pulp contained in the quarters is juicy, tangy, rich in sugar and vitamins and orange-yellow or dark red (sanguine) in color. The characteristic odor comes from the numerous vesicles containing an essential oil located in the thickness of their zest. The orange is not a very fragile fruit, but when it is overripe, it rots easily.
The propagation of the orange tree is done by bud grafting. The orange harvest takes place from November to April until June for late ones. The climatic requirements are very great and the water needs very high (1,200 mm, half of which is between March and April). The soil must be permeable. Orange varieties grown in Algeria include navels (Thomson, Washington), sanguines and Valencia Late.
