Ceramic Mosaic - Tlemcen 14th Century
This mosaic is made of ceramic marquetry panels with geometric and floral interlacing from the Tachfiniya Madrasa (Tlemcen, 720 AH – 1318 AD).
It is a combination of glazed pieces of different tones cut according to a design and fitted into each other. These pieces are previously molded, fired, then enameled and annealed.
They will be assembled and linked together with a mortar of sand and lime which is fixed on the wall to be decorated with bone or wooden pins sealed in the joints.
Ceramic marquetry is used to decorate Valencian minarets, paneling and paving of the Tachfinya Madrasa or other religious buildings. The most commonly used colors are green, yellow and manganese brown.
