The Dakar Friendship Games in 1963 were the prelude to the holding of the first African games. Brazzaville was designated to host them in 1965. Algeria participated and won 12 medals (2 gold, 3 silver and 7 bronze). In order to better manage the organization of the African Games, the continental leaders of African sport created in December 1966, under the aegis of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the High Council for Sports in Africa (CSSA). This superior body of African sport designates Lagos (Nigeria) as the host city of the African Games.
Thirty-nine countries took part from July 7 to 18, 1973, including Algeria, which won 24 medals (4 gold, 6 silver and 14 bronze) and ranked 6th. Candidate for the organization of the 3rd edition, Algeria welcomed it with great fanfare in July 1978. Our athletes won 65 medals (21 gold, 19 silver and 25 bronze). Forty-five countries participated in these games, which is a record to this day. It took 9 years, i.e. 1987, to attend the 4th games in Nairobi (Kenya) after several postponements due to financial difficulties. The periodicity is not respected.

During this edition, Algeria won 66 medals (17 gold, 25 silver and 24 bronze). Cairo (Egypt) honors its commitments and organizes the 5th African Games in 1991 within the set deadlines. Algeria distinguished itself by winning 100 medals (29 gold, 37 silver and 34 bronze). Despite certain difficulties, Zimbabwe is there for the 6th games from September 13 to 23, 1995. The Algerian medal collection then reached the number of 58. The 7th African games will take place in Johannesburg (South Africa) from September 9 to 19, 1999.
