Created on May 25, 1963, the Organization of African Unity currently brings together 53 states. Its creation stems from the desire of African countries to complete the emancipation of the continent from colonial yoke and to work towards the realization of the legitimate aspirations of African people for freedom, equality, justice and dignity.
The OAU Charter, inspired by the ideals of peace and solidarity, based on the principles of sovereignty and equality which govern inter-African relations, has the ultimate objective of providing the continent with an appropriate framework for the expression of fraternity and solidarity integrated within a larger unity which transcends ethnic and national considerations.
The OAU has the merit of today being a privileged forum for African countries, allowing them to express their concerns and their points of view on all issues that interest Africa. It also constitutes the crucible within which the vectors of mobilization are forged and the action of Member States develops with a view to promoting and defending the collective interests of Africa.
Faced with current challenges, the pan-African organization has clearly defined its priorities. It is fully engaged in an exciting effort of recovery, development and integration and strives to organize the common action of its member states to improve its capacities in handling conflicts and ensuring the necessary climate of peace and stability on the continent.
The 35th OAU Summit that Algeria will host in July 1999 will make Algiers the capital of Africa. Having the particularity of being the last summit of the century, it will have, by the very fact that it will be held in a pivotal period, between the 20th and 21st centuries, a particularly significant dimension in the history of the Organization. From this point of view, it will have to carry out not only an exhaustive evaluation of the results of the action of the OAU, but also and above all to open up other perspectives for the continental organization so as to adapt its action to the new realities of the next millennium, in particular the major challenges of globalization.
