National Day
On July 22 each year, Algerian Police Day is celebrated, the central institution of which is called the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). This date corresponds to July 22, 1962, the date of its creation by decree. After the independence of Algeria, around a hundred executives from Tunisia and Morocco and around thirty police commissioners trained by the FLN at the Cairo Police Academy constituted the first core of the National Security. The training of new recruits takes place in the various schools which open their doors across the country, starting with that of Hussein Dey in 1962.
The missions assigned to the Algerian police differ in no way from those assigned to all other police forces in the world, namely guaranteeing public peace and security, protecting people and property and ensuring the application of laws. Changes were made to the functioning of the police with a view to its improvement, which led to the creation of Wilaya Security in 1970 from which the different services were brought together. This is a pivotal period for the institution which is embarking on a policy of modernization and strengthening of the training and retraining structures of current staff and the acquisition of the necessary equipment.
The female element joined the National Security services in 1973, which had the merit of bringing new human qualities to the police services. Since 1995, the institution has launched various actions aimed at professionalizing it, opening it up more to technical and scientific development and, above all, bringing it closer to the citizen.
