It is a gregarious fish of the mullidae family, red more orange after death. It lives on rocks and gravel bottoms, but sometimes also on soft bottoms up to 400 m.
Its average size varies between 10 and 25 cm and can reach 40 cm. Generally a reddish brown longitudinal stripe from the eye to the tail, highlighted with three yellow lines, first dorsal fin colored. First sexual maturity at one year.
Breeds from April to July, feeds on crustaceans, especially shrimps and amphipods, molluscs and small fish.
