Dentex gibbosus (Hunchback)
This fish is more or less dark pink. Bears a small black spot just behind the soft dorsal, another purplish one at the axil of the pectorals going up to the upper angle of the operculum. 3rd to 5th spiny ray.
Strong frontal hump in large males. Its common size varies between 50 and 75 cm and can reach 100 cm. It is found on sandy bottoms from 20 to 220 m. Reproduces in spring, protandric hermaphrodite (male then female).
Carnivorous, it feeds on crustaceans, fish and cephalopods. It is caught by trawls, gillnets, bottom longlines, handlines and trolling lines.
In Algeria, it bears the names of fireman and Hunchback.
