Sydney 2000 Olympic Games (Australia)
The modern Olympic Games constitute the largest global sporting gathering. They bring together every four years (each leap year) athletes from all sporting disciplines from all over the world, recording, over the years, an ever-increasing participation. Aiming to be an event that transcends political divisions, they allow the participation of all states, even the smallest, including countries that are not recognized by the United Nations.
The only cases of cancellation or politicization of the Olympic Games are the editions of 1916 and 1944 (canceled because of the First and Second World Wars), as well as those of 1980 in Moscow (boycotted by the capitalist bloc) and 1984 in Los Angeles (boycotted by the socialist bloc).
Algeria left its mark on these games by winning three Olympic titles respectively by Hassiba Boulmerka (1,500 m at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona), Noureddine Morceli (1,500 m at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta) and Hocine Soltani (boxing at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta). The 27th Olympic Games in Sydney carry several particularities.
This is the first edition of the third millennium, moreover organized on a continent (Australia) other than the three which had hosted the 26 previous editions (Europe, America and Asia), with a new participation record (199 countries, 10,651 athletes, including 4,069 women, in 300 events).
