The main and central source of all national intellectual production in all fields of knowledge, the National Library of Algeria is considered a central data bank, this by virtue of the legislative provisions which confer on it the prerogatives of legal deposit (Order No. 16/96 of 02/07/1996) whose objectives consist of the collection, conservation and dissemination of the cultural heritage produced in Algeria, such as books, periodicals, posters, maps, films, compact discs, photos, plans, audio and video cassettes, compact discs, video discs, CD-ROMs, microforms, etc. Thanks to legal deposit, the library produces a biannual publication, “The bibliography of Algeria”, which lists all the documents published in Algeria. The latter is widely disseminated nationally and internationally.
Management of the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is ensured by the library. This standard for identifying works facilitates the census of national intellectual production. In terms of acquisition, the library buys national production and most of it from abroad. It runs scientific, cultural, educational and technical activities necessary for its influence. Le Hamma, its new headquarters, is an achievement of 13 levels over a total area of 67,000 m2.
The first two levels house library activities (acquisition, cataloging, classification), the computer center, the chemistry and sterilization laboratories, the binding and restoration laboratories, the photo laboratory, the equipment maintenance workshops, as well as the spaces reserved for the processing and consultation of manuscripts.
The other five levels are reserved for different types of readers: youth, public reading and research which have a periodical room, audiovisual spaces, a room equipped for the visually impaired and two conference rooms with respective capacities of 240 and 130 seats.
The last six levels are reserved for the storage of 10 million volumes over a length of 170 linear km of shelving.
