Blood transfusion is a therapeutic method that saves many human lives. In Algeria, transfusion activity (recruitment of blood donors, blood collection, preparation of labile blood products, biological qualifications of donations, storage and distribution of labile blood products) is carried out by blood transfusion structures.
These structures are attached to healthcare establishments (university hospital centers, specialized hospital establishments and health sectors). The staff working within these structures are made up of doctors and paramedics. The vast majority of medical staff are represented by general practitioners. The transfusion activity falls within the framework of a national blood policy, the monitoring of which is ensured by organizations such as the National Blood Agency (ANS), a public administrative establishment with a scientific and technical vocation, created on April 9, 1995 in application of Executive Decree No. 95-108 and placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.
The main mission of the ANS is to develop and monitor the implementation of a national blood policy. In this context, it is responsible for the organization of blood transfusion, the development of rules of good practice for the exercise of transfusion activity and standards for the control of blood and its derivatives, the establishment of the nomenclature of reagents, consumables and equipment as well as the techniques that can be used and the proposal of transfer rates.
The ANS also supports the centralization of information on blood and its derivatives for evaluation purposes, the promotion of fractionation activities and biotechniques and the manufacturing of the reagents used, as well as training and research in the field of blood transfusion.
