Mohamed Racim
Mohamed Racim was born on June 24, 1896 in the Casbah of Algiers into a large family of artists. His father Ali, his uncle and his older brother Omar practiced the delicate trade of wood sculpture and painting.
In 1910, he joined the office of the Academy of Algiers as a copyist-draftsman. His first masterful work was the ornamentation of the book The Life of Mohammed that Dinet had illustrated. Racim visits some capitals and cities including Paris, Cordoba, Granada, Cairo, Rome, Vienna, Bucharest and Stockholm.
After the creation of several works, Racim's talent was universally recognized with the award of the Orientalists medal in 1924 and the Algerian artistic grand prize in 1933. The same year, he was appointed professor at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Algiers.
He worked with Georges Marçais, historian of Muslim art with whom he undertook the publication of several masterpieces. In 1975, his tragic end at the age of 79 profoundly affected the world of culture.
