The Greylag Goose (Anser anser) is a bird belonging to the family Anatidae and the subfamily Anserinae.
Description
The Greylag Goose (Anser anser) is the ancestor of most breeds of domestic geese. It measures between 75 and 90 cm. The plumage is uniformly grayish with a white rump. The legs are pink and the beak orange.
Housing
Wild individuals frequent a wide variety of wetlands. The Greylag Goose is found mainly in the north and east of Europe, in Türkiye, in Russia and as far as China. However, a few individuals nest in France, notably in Alsace, Bay of Somme and Brière. It winters throughout southern Europe and Asia depending on the populations.
Biology
The Greylag Goose is an aquatic species that swims more often than other geese even though it feeds mainly by grazing. The nest is placed near water, hidden in vegetation and reeds. The Greylag Goose is extremely gregarious during migration.
Populations
The wild population is estimated between 920,000 and 970,000 individuals.
