Created in 1983, this park is located in the far east of Algeria and is limited by the Algerian-Tunisian border, in the wilaya of El Tarf. It extends over an area of 76,436 ha and is characterized by a great diversity of ecosystems: lake, marine, forest and dune. These particularities make it an exception in the heart of the Mediterranean. The El Kala wetlands contain remarkable wealth and constitute the most important wetland in the Maghreb. Two sites are classified on the list of wetlands of international importance: Lake Tonga and Lake Oubeïra. These wetlands are located on the Western Palearctic Flyway. As a result, tens of thousands of waterbirds come to winter or stopover. Mammals are represented by the Barbary deer, a species which is only found in Algeria or Tunisia, as well as the otter, the genet, the jackal and the striped hyena.
