Since the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, at the initiative of the Frenchman Jules Rimet, to the 17th edition which will take place from May 31 to June 30, 2002, for the first time in Asia, football has always been the most important and intense event, far surpassing the largest sporting gatherings in the world, rivaling other current events, with the exception of a few major scientific or political firsts.
Since then, the Football World Cup continues to attract worldwide attention. Indeed, the 'World Cup', so called, has become over the years the most publicized event on the planet as it constitutes a major phenomenon adopted by all classes and cultures without distinction.
Throughout its brilliant journey, the World Cup trophy has continued to be the covetousness of all football teams and players through the magic of its spectacle, the joy and emotion it provides making each meeting a grandiose and unique celebration, making it a real industry with multiple challenges.
The 2002 edition will be distinguished by several particularities which will be exceptions, among which it should be noted that for the first time this event will take place jointly in two different countries, in this case Japan and South Korea. It should also be noted that this will be the last time that the country holding the trophy is directly qualified, to the final phase.
Thirty-two qualified countries will take part in the final phase, including five African countries including Cameroon (which is participating for the fourth time in a row), Nigeria (which is playing in its third consecutive World Cup), Tunisia (third participation), South Africa (second participation in a row) and Senegal for the first time at the World Cup.
The seventeenth edition of the World Cup which will take place in the Asian continent will, as such, be the first major sporting event of the new millennium.
