It was in December 1891, at the college in Springfield, Massachusetts (USA), that basketball was created, from the imagination and ingenuity of Dr. James Naismith. Lecturer at the Higher School of Sports of the YMCA of Springfield, he was charged by the director, Dr. Luther Gulick, with inventing a game presenting an alternative to monotonous gymnastics and which could be practiced indoors during the long winter periods. Since that date, basketball has grown considerably to reach perfection by becoming one of the most practiced sports in the world, with more than 250 million fans, both in halls and on urban asphalt. The new game, which developed mainly thanks to meetings between university students, was presented for the first time as a demonstration at the 1904 Olympic Games in Saint-Louis (USA). The rapid universalization of basketball requires that the rules be unified. This is how the International Amateur Basketball Federation (FIBA) was created in September 1934. Thanks to it, basketball acquired sporting recognition at the highest level and was admitted to the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. FIBA manages all the major world competitions and more than 200 countries are affiliated with it. In Algeria, basketball officially took root at the beginning of the 20th century. This new discipline, initially practiced exclusively by Europeans, will gradually open up to Algerians, in particular with the creation of basketball sections in Muslim clubs. In 1962, when the Algerian Basketball Federation (FABB) was created, there were only 3 leagues and around thirty clubs devoted to this discipline. The FABB today has 24 leagues, nearly 200 mixed clubs and 15,000 members. The world championship which brings together the best continental teams is organized every four years. The first edition took place in 1950 in Buenos Aires (Argentina) with the participation of 10 countries. It is the State of Indiana (USA) which has the privilege of organizing this 14th edition which will take place from August 28 to September 9, 2002. Sixteen countries representing the five continents will take part. These are Angola and Algeria for Africa, China and Lebanon for Asia, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Germany, Russia and Spain for Europe, New Zealand for Oceania and, finally, Argentina, Venezuela, Canada, Brazil, Puerto Rico and the United States for the American continent. Africa has been presenting itself for the competition since the 5th edition in Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1967 and its basketball progresses from edition to edition thanks to the regularity of its representatives. It took 12 participations in the African championship out of the 21 editions held for Algeria to qualify for the 2002 world championship in Indianapolis.
