On July 5, 2002, the whole of Algeria celebrated the 40th anniversary of the proclamation of independence. This date represents the beginning of a new era in the history of Algeria: a long colonial night which lasted more than a century had in fact just ended.
July 5, 1962 allowed the Algerian people to enter history, after a succession of revolts and struggles lasting one hundred and thirty years, crowned by the war of national liberation which won independence against one of the greatest colonial powers. Revolutionary Algeria has thus left its mark on all oppressed peoples and provides an example of courage, dignity and sovereignty.
This same date is also celebrated as Youth Day, thus paying tribute to this large segment of the population which has always represented a precious asset for the Nation. It is on her that the greatest hopes have always been placed; this youth that we find at the forefront every time the sovereignty or destiny of the country is threatened.
Today's youth are determined to contribute actively and directly to the development of the country, overcoming the difficulties and obstacles to which a long and painful tragedy has exposed them. This is why it is, today more than ever, necessary to respond to the growing social and economic needs of this fringe, in order to open Algerian society to the ideals of democracy and freedom, and restore Algeria to its true place in the world.
