In 1975, Algeria hosted the Mediterranean Games. Three years later, she organized the African Games. Today, after an absence of half a century in the organization of competitions of international scope, Algeria is preparing to test its organizational capacities by hosting the largest gathering of Arab Youth, from September 1 to 15, 2003, by decision of the Council of Arab Ministers of Youth and Sports, during its 21st session held in February 1998.
Furthermore, because of the importance that sport can have, and out of concern to promote the image of Algeria in the eyes of the world, these games are placed under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Through this meeting, Algeria aims to achieve several objectives, both national and Arab:
- Strengthen exchanges between the national and Olympic commissions and sports federations of Arab countries, particularly for preparation and training in Algeria, as well as the realization of joint projects.
- Test and strengthen the country's organizational capacities in anticipation of the organization of the 2007 African Games.
- Examine the opportunity to support the organization of other international events.
- Strengthen ties between Arab youth.
- Restore and enhance all sports infrastructure and equipment, in accordance with accepted international standards
The Arab Games are organized every four years. The first edition took place in Egypt (Alexandria) in 1953, the last, in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1999. This year's edition is part of the triple commemoration of the fiftieth of the games (1953-2003), the fortieth of the Algerian Olympic Movement (creation of the COA in 1963) and the 25th anniversary of the creation of the council of Arab ministers of youth and sports.
