Helix aspera snails
Is a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod, belonging to the Mollusca, family of helicidae whose terrestrial forms are found in Europe and North Africa. In Algeria this species is widespread in all regions (the largest specimen was collected in the Touggourt region). The globular shell is formed of a spiral having 4 to 5 turns. It is distinguished by a reflected peristome of whitish colors. The size of the animal varies from 40 to 45 mm.
This species is renowned for the damage it causes to vegetable crops. However, it is also very important for human nutrition. Indeed, it can fill a deficit in proteins and mineral elements, if production is done by large-scale breeding: heliciculture. Helix aspersa is a hermaphrodite (obligatory mating) species. It produces around 80 eggs, after incubation for 15 to 21 days, giving young ones resembling adults which immediately feed on plants.
The species, like Rumina decollata, prepares for a slow life at the same time of year and experiences an equally high mortality rate.
