On October 18, 2003, the Algerian Olympic Committee celebrated its 40th anniversary. It was in fact on the same date, in 1963, that fifteen Presidents of National Sports Federations created the first Algerian Olympic body, under the presidency of the Under-Secretary of State for Sports at the time, Mr. Sadek BATEL.
The Executive office is also created and will be composed of twelve members: seven elected presidents of federations and five personalities who have served Algerian sport. Dr MAOUCHE Mohand is its first president.
After its constitution, the Algerian Olympic Committee joined the International Olympic family through recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during the session in Innsbruck (Austria) in 1964.
In October 1964, the Algerian flag flew for the first time during an Olympics. This is happening in Tokyo (Japan) and it is the gymnast Mohamed LAZHARI who will be the first Algerian athlete entered in the Olympic Games. From this date, Algeria will take part in all meetings with the exception of that of Montreal 76, boycotted by all African countries due to the problem of apartheid.
The country participates in all regional and continental Olympic events: the Mediterranean, Arab and African games. In 1975, it hosted the Mediterranean Games. Three years later, it was the African Games, during which Algeria won its first international medals.
Other medals will follow. But it was not until 1992 that he won the first gold medal. It will be conquered hard by Hassiba BOULMERKA, during the Barcelona Olympic Games. The success continues and gold is there again thanks to Nour-eddine MORCELI and Hocine SOLTANI at ATLANTA 1996.
Finally, other athletes stand out brilliantly including BENIDA Nouria MERAH, gold medalist in the 1500m, during the Sydney 2000 games.
On this anniversary date, Algérie Poste issues a stamp bearing the image of Dr MAOUCHE, emblematic figure of the Algerian sports movement.
Maouche Mohand Amokrane was born in Bejaia in 1925. He did his primary and secondary education there then joined the University of Constantine. Combining brilliant studies with a remarkable sporting career, he will be the best right winger of the Constantine Sports Club and university champion in the 100m sprint. He will be part of the Algerian Red Star, and will form an unforgettable tandem with ZAIBEK Abdelkader. He will have a rich career in the various sporting institutions that he will preside over, such as the Algerian Football Federation (1962), and those of which he will be a member, the African Football Confederation. He will also be part of the historic Tokyo delegation.
Dr MAOUCHE will leave us on January 2, 1971. He will have left his mark on the history of Algerian and African sport.
