Solidarity with the victims of the earthquake of May 21, 2003
Earthquakes or earthquakes are movements of the earth's crust caused by a rupture of the material constituting the earth's crust. This rupture comes from an underground collapse at a point called the “hypocenter” or “focus”. The resulting collapses give rise to waves and vibrations which successively reach points on the ground surface increasingly distant from the focus.
Some Wilayas of the country recently experienced this natural phenomenon which caused a powerful earthquake whose epicenter was located in the Wilaya of Boumerdes which recorded the greatest number of losses: hundreds of human lives, localities and neighborhoods completely razed, such as Zemmouri and Corso.
On May 21, 2003, around 7:45 p.m., a dull rumble rose from the bowels of the earth, the ground began to sway dangerously. The catastrophe is so sudden that any attempt to escape is almost impossible. In a few seconds, disaster strikes. Those who live on the upper floors find themselves on the ground, and those below no longer exist. The survivors are stunned by the terrible spectacle of desolation.
From the first hours following the disaster, the national community organized all its activity according to the tragedy.
Throughout the country, arms are outstretched to offer blood first, then anything that is likely to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
The outpouring of solidarity has crossed borders. A few hours after the disaster, brotherly and friendly countries spontaneously offered their support, some participating directly in the relief efforts.
President Bouteflika visited the scene of the disaster twice. Urgent and concrete measures are being taken:
- The regions affected by the earthquake are declared “disaster zones”.
- A national commission is formed under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. Its main mission is to make all the necessary means available to local authorities and to coordinate all operations aimed at meeting the needs of the affected regions.
All the efforts thus deployed demonstrate in a spectacular manner the firm determination of the Algerian people and their leaders to build, by themselves, new cities of peace, justice and progress.
