The Olive Tree - World Arbor Day
From the Oleaceae family. Includes nearly 900 species divided into 24 genera of shrubs, trees or climbing plants. The olive tree genus 'Oléa européa' contains nearly 20 species. Native to the eastern part of the Mediterranean basin, it adapts perfectly to dry summers, requires very high light and mild winters.
The olive tree is grown for its fruits which yield a health-promoting edible oil and are also preserved in brine for consumption. Medium tree with rounded foliage, short branches with evergreen foliage. The fruits are generally spherical green in color, turning red brown or black depending on the variety.
The harvest of green olives takes place in October. Black olives are fully ripe between December and January.
In Algeria, the existence of the olive tree dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. JC, and even further. The national olive growing population is made up of 18,500,000 trees of a very diverse variety (Chemlal, Azeradj, Bouchouk, Sigoise...) distributed throughout the north of the country.
Currently, significant olive growing areas are produced in the steppe and pre-Saharan regions of Algeria.
