The date palm or 'phoenix dactylifera' is a monocotyledon of the palmaceae family comprising twelve species. The term 'phoenix' derives from 'phoinix' name of the date palm among the Greeks, 'dactylifera' comes from the Latin 'dactylus' and the Greek 'dactulus', meaning finger due to the shape of the fruit. The 'phoenixes' have 36 somatic chromosomes and can multiply easily among themselves.
The estimated number of palm trees in Algeria exceeds 13 million trees, all varieties combined. That of the cultivars listed is around 900 varieties, the most widespread of which are:
- 'Deglet Nour',
- 'Ghars',
- 'Degla Beida',
- 'Mech Degla',
- 'Takerboucht'.
National production of dates exceeds 400,000 tonnes per year, of which more than 12,000 are exported to Europe, Asia and America.
