World Intellectual Property Day
World Intellectual Property Day was dedicated by the World Intellectual Property Organization in September 1999, at the suggestion of Algeria and the People's Republic of China.
The World Intellectual Property Organization is a United Nations intergovernmental organization specializing in intellectual property which brings together 171 member states.
Algeria joined this organization in 1975.
The establishment of a World Intellectual Property Day aims to promote general awareness of the importance of Intellectual Property in the world due to the very major economic, technical and political challenges it represents, at the dawn of the third millennium.
It was also dedicated because the coming century is that of an economy of knowledge and information techniques, and Intellectual Property will play a major role in boosting economic and social development.
Intellectual Property constitutes a tool that can be used to promote a whole range of social progress, because it involves a wide diversity of users, from very diverse sectors, interested in the aspects of Intellectual Property linked to commerce, biodiversity, biotechnology, electronic commerce, innovation, Copyright, Neighboring Rights, traditional cultural heritage, and especially the development of the Internet.
The date of April 26 was chosen for the consecration of this day because it is the date of creation of the World Intellectual Property Organization (1970).
