World Day Against Drugs & Addiction
Nowadays, drug addiction constitutes one of the greatest evils that plagues modern societies, particularly those which are going through economic, social and political crises and suffer from contradictions and inconsistencies.
When we talk about drug addiction, we think of drugs such as hashish, heroin, cocaine. A very restrictive notion of drug addiction that the World Health Organization (WHO) defines as 'the voluntary, abusive, periodic or chronic absorption, harmful to the individual and to society, of a natural or synthetic drug'. As such, alcohol in excessive doses, psychotropic medications which affect the nervous system and lead to drug dependence as well as other chemicals are also drugs.
The section most exposed to this scourge is made up of adolescents. At this age of life where the period of physiological upheaval is very profound, the experience of drugs can respond to a need for risk, provocation, transgression and typical revolt, especially if the subjects evolve in areas conducive to the development of this scourge, such as unbalanced families and societies experiencing crises.
Like other countries, Algeria has become aware of this evil which is eating away at part of its youth. Considerable efforts are being made by public authorities to stem, if not eradicate, the development of this devastating disease. In addition to the actions carried out by the State, organizations in the national associative movement are active through information and awareness-raising actions to support young people in difficulty in their living environments.
This is how initiatives are undertaken to create a healthy framework ensuring development and integration into the social fabric, by occupying young people affected by drug problems with educational, cultural, sporting and leisure activities.
